The Life Friction Audit

The Life Friction Audit.

Most of what wears people down isn't dramatic. It's a drawer that doesn't open, a call you keep meaning to make, a subscription you forgot you had, a conversation you've been carrying around for a year. None of it is urgent. All of it is asking something from you.

This is a list of ninety-six of those things across six parts of life. You go through it and mark each one. That's the whole thing.

The old version of this asked whether everything was perfect. This one asks something better: is anything that matters being ignored?

Your life can be messy for good reasons. Someone you love is ill. You're remodelling. You started a business and the money is upside down this year. A condition can't simply be checked off. None of that is failure. What costs you is the fourth state — the thing you keep complaining about while doing nothing at all.

Each item can be one of four things.

Handled

Sorted. It isn't asking anything of you.

Needs attention

This may be costing you more than it needs to.

I'm choosing to accept this

It's a trade-off, and that's fine. You decided.

HOME + ENVIRONMENT

0 needs attention

Is the physical world around you helping, or constantly asking something from you?

My home is a place I'm glad to walk into.
There's nothing in my house I keep stepping around.
My car doesn't need anything I've been putting off.
The clothes in my closet fit me and I'd wear any of them.
Nothing in my home is waiting on a repair I keep meaning to schedule.
My files and important papers are somewhere I could find them in two minutes.
The light in the rooms I use most is good light.
My bed gives me a decent night's sleep.
I'm not storing anything I don't want or need.
The place I work is a place I can think in.
My plants and animals are doing well.
I like the area I live in.
There's nothing about my home I'm quietly putting up with.
People are comfortable in my house.
I have the tools I need for the things I actually do.
Nothing in my environment is wearing me down.

BODY + RECOVERY

0 needs attention

Are the basics being cared for, investigated and supported?

I'm sleeping well enough most nights.
I move my body in some way most weeks.
I've seen a doctor recently enough to know where I stand.
I've seen a dentist in the last year.
My eyes have been checked recently enough.
I know my blood pressure.
I know what my blood work says.
I'm not ignoring a symptom I've noticed.
I'm taking care of whatever conditions I have, not just living around them.
I eat in a way I'd be comfortable describing out loud.
I drink enough water.
I have something to look forward to most days.
I take real time off, not just time away from my desk.
I'm not running on adrenaline to get through the week.
I have a life outside my work.
I'm not suffering through something I could get help with.

MONEY + LIFE ADMIN

0 needs attention

Are your financial and administrative systems settled enough that you're not constantly cleaning up emergencies?

My bills get paid on time without drama.
I know roughly what I spend each month.
I'm putting something aside, even if it's small.
My tax returns are filed and my taxes are paid.
I know what I owe and to whom.
I've paid back anything I borrowed from a person.
I have some cushion if something goes wrong.
My insurance covers what I'd actually need it to cover.
I know how much I'm worth on paper.
I have no legal loose ends hanging over me.
My will is current and accurate.
I know who's listed as my emergency contact.
Someone I trust could get into my accounts if I couldn't.
My advance directives are written down somewhere findable.
I know where my medical records are.
I know what I'm subscribed to and I still want all of it.

TIME + ATTENTION

Where are distraction, overcommitment and digital noise stealing your day?

My phone doesn't run my day.
My notifications are set the way I chose, not the way they arrived.
My inbox isn't a second job.
I'm not reachable every hour I'm awake.
Social media doesn't routinely leave me feeling worse.
I get through most days without losing an hour I can't account for.
I'm usually early or comfortably on time.
I say no to things I don't want to do.
I have time in the week that isn't spoken for.
My passwords are secure and I'm not reusing one everywhere.
My photos and documents are somewhere I could actually find them.
I'm not carrying commitments I agreed to and regret.
I finish what I start, or I decide out loud that I'm not going to.
There's room in my calendar for something unplanned.
I know what I'm giving my attention to and why.
I have quiet somewhere in my day.

PEOPLE + CONVERSATIONS

0 needs attention

Are there relationships, boundaries or conversations taking up space?

There's no one I'd dread running into.
I've told the people I love that I love them, recently.
I've said the thing I've been meaning to say.
I get along with the people I work with.
I've let go of the relationships that were costing me more than they gave.
I have people who like me for who I am rather than what I do.
I'm caught up on the calls and messages I owe.
I tell the truth, including when it's inconvenient.
I ask for what I need instead of hoping someone notices.
I've forgiven the people worth forgiving.
I don't talk about people behind them.
I keep my word and people know it.
I have at least one person I can say anything to.
I spend time with people who aren't trying to change me.
I've made peace with the relationships that ended.
I clear up misunderstandings quickly instead of letting them sit.

LOOSE ENDS

What have you been meaning to deal with for six months, six years or six minutes?

There's no appointment I keep meaning to make.
There's no phone call I keep putting off.
There's no form sitting somewhere half-filled-in.
There's no email I've been avoiding.
There's nothing I've borrowed that I haven't returned.
There's no room in my house I avoid.
There's no drawer I don't open.
There's nothing I've promised someone that I haven't delivered.
There's no project I abandoned that still bothers me.
There's nothing I've been meaning to cancel.
There's nothing I've been meaning to fix.
There's nothing I've been meaning to throw out.
There's no apology I owe.
There's no decision I've been putting off making.
There's nothing I keep complaining about and doing nothing about.
There's nothing important I'm currently ignoring.

Places where life may be asking more of you than it needs to.

You don't have to do anything with all of them. Pick one. Make the appointment, cancel the subscription, send the message, put the document where you can find it. Five minutes, and your life is one notch easier to live.

And if you'd rather talk one of them through with somebody, the first sixty minutes is on me. Text, email or a call, whichever suits you — and wherever in the world you happen to be.
